The 31-year-old saw his six year stay at Kenilworth Road ended when he wasn’t offered a new contract by manager Nathan Jones and now finds himself in the unusual position of having to seek employment.

Speaking to the News/Gazette, he said: “I’ve had some small interest but some clubs are still playing, people don’t know where they are, the news is so fresh that I’m hoping that I’ll have more interest.

“With the finding out so late, it hasn’t been long for me or anyone else to realise that I’m now available so, it’s just a matter of holding on. Having been at the club for so long, it’s not a decision I’m used to either.

“It’s a difficult thing to talk about as it’s not really an experience that I’ve had to deal with for a long time, so we shall see.”

After two Conference play-off final disappointments with Luton, before ultimately winning promotion in the 2013-14 campaign, Lawless is hoping to remain in the Football League, adding: “Every player wants to play as high as they possibly can.

“In my scenario, it took me a lot of play-off finals, a lot of disappointment and a lot of hard work to get into the league and the last thing I want to do is leave that goal.

“So fingers crossed I’ll be able to play as high as I can, but it’s a matter of waiting to see now, because this feels like home now.

“In my adult life, this is the longest place I’ve lived, we’re very settled, so it’s something that comes along with this circumstance unfortunately, so we’ll just have to see what the future holds.”
