The 21-year-old, who signed a new three year deal last week, bagged 16 goals last season to finish as the club’s top scorer and has hit the ground running this term.

Saturday’s double in the 2-1 win over Brighton made it five goals in just under two hours of football, as Cuthbert said: “You can see how high in confidence he is, he’s signed a new deal and rightly so.

“Jack’s a goalscorer, he’ll get you goals, he showed that last year, whether he started or came off the bench.

“He’s going to be a massive player for us this year, when he sees the goal he shoots and nine times out of 10 he scores, it’s great to watch as a defender.”

Boss Nathan Jones was delighted by Marriott’s prolific start to the season too, adding: “Our pressing was there and Jack’s clinical, he’s shown that, he’s been outstanding in pre-season.

“If he only didn’t have sunstroke the other day (against Boreham Wood), he’d probably have scored even more

“That’s why we’ve taken the chance to renew his contract for even longer, the club have been fantastic with that to be fair and shown their ambition.

“He’s come back looking sharp which is the main thing and they all have.

“Cameron (McGeehan) is another one whose come back looking sharp and then what we’ve added, we’ve got excellent competition right throughout the team.”
