Mullins is confident passing approach can bring success to Luton

After leading Oxford United to automatic promotion last campaign, with the U’s producing an attractive brand of football, Mullins is optimistic that his new side can reap the benefits from the passing style introduced by Nathan Jones when he took over in January.

The 30-year-old, who penned a two year deal at Kenilworth Road after being released from the Kassam Stadium, said: “At Oxford, we got promoted there by trying to play football as in years gone by, teams have said you can’t do it that way, but you can and that’s the aim.

“Playing football is the best way to do it and the most attractive way to do it.

“With Oxford we didn’t go there trying to be strong and solid but we were when we needed to be. We had individuals within the team who can cause havoc and we tried to do it the right way, so it’s a good blueprint.

“Hopefully we can go one better with Luton this season though and win the league.”

A feature of Hatters’ play under Jones saw attacks being built from the back, with the centre halves regularly encouraged to take possession from the keeper.

It’s something that Mullins is comfortable being asked to do too, as he said: “Yes, I’m very happy doing that, it’s something coming up through my career I’ve liked to do, start it up and play to midfield.

“I’m paid to keep clean sheets which is always nice, but last year at Oxford we did it in a way that was attractive to watch, and for me, it’s the best way to be and the most enjoyable.

“Getting on the ball and starting play, and dictating the game, not as much as the midfield players, but you can get the ball to those players.

“So for me it’s enjoyable to do it that way and I’m pleased I’ve come to a club where the manager wants to do that.

“After playing against them towards the end of last season, I like the way he had the team playing. They beat us at Oxford and it was tough to play against, they played football which I’m looking forward to being involved in.”
