Town boss John Still will make a late decision on whether the likes of Jon Shaw, Alex Lawless and Solomon Taiwo are fit enough to be involved in today’s Skrill Premier clash with Cambridge, writes Mike Simmonds.
Shaw managed an hour against Forest Green Rovers on Saturday before coming off looking in some discomfort, while both Taiwo and Lawless were put through their paces before the game.
Still said: “We’re struggling with centre forwards a little bit. Alex Wall is not quite fit and Jon’s (Shaw) carrying an injury.
“But having said that, Jon first half (against Rovers) was superb. He had a bit of a problem with his groin, but I felt he was a threat from our attacks.
“We could get the ball into him, he’s worked hard, forced them to play long early. But we’ve got to look after him properly.
“I think they’re both (Taiwo and Lawless) very close. I feel sorry for Alex, he just gets back and then gets a little niggle, which happens sometimes when you’ve been out for a little while, but they’re not going to be long.
“We’ve trained on Sunday morning and we won’t make any decisions on any of our players until we meet up and see how they are.”
Midfielder Jake Howells is pushing for a recall after impressing in his last two appearances from the bench as Still is expecting a tough clash with the early league leaders.
He continued: “Jake’s done ever so well. We’ve got good competition for tomorrow, so hopefully everyone’s fit.
“I think probably, both teams had what they might class as decent results at the weekend, but both us and them, are probably still getting everything right and everything proper.
“They’ve had a decent start though.”
A number of ex-Hatters will be involved for the visitors, who are managed by former Town boss Richard Money, with defender Michael Spillane and full back Greg Taylor, who Still released at the end of last season, expected to start.
When asked if Taylor would try to prove Still made the wrong decision, the boss added: “I think so, yes, of course, and I’d expect him to.
“But we proved our application at the weekend and I hope there’s a good game coming, it should be a good test.”
