Luton come up short as Royston hit six
Difficult weekend for Bedfordshire side
Luton Town Hockey Club men's first XI had a difficult day as they went down 6-2 at home to Royston at the weekend.
In Division Two South of the East Hockey League, the home side trailed 3-1 at half time with their goal coming courtesy of Mikey Crowson.
Gary Newman found the target after the break to cut the deficit to one, but the visitors upped a gear and struck three more times to consolidate their advantage.
The men's second XI suffered their first defeat for a number of weeks as they went down 3-1 to Hertford in Division Four Southwest.
Luton started slowly and found themselves three down in the opening 15 minutes and, despite a strike from James Fielden, could not get back into the contest.
In the Midlands Feeder League, the ladies' first XI visited Kettering and returned with nothing to show for their efforts as they lost 1-0.
Solid defending by Luton kept the game scoreless at half time, but Kettering netted a good goal in the second period to take the points.
A late Sam Clayton goal earned the ladies' second XI a
1-0 victory against Stevenage IIs in Division One of the Five Counties League.
In wet and windy conditions, both sides produced some excellent play and there were chances created at both ends.
However, it was Luton who claimed the decisive goal when Clayton netted five minutes from time.
In Division Four, the ladies' third XI battled hard against Queenswood, but were on the wrong end of an 8-1 scoreline.
Ami Payne, who capitalised on a strong run from Rachel Gibb, scored Luton's consolation.
In the junior ranks, the club's U10s were victorious at the Bedford tournament.
The group stage saw Luton win two and draw two of their four games. They got the better of St Neots 2-0 and Tring IIs 5-2 and shared goalless draws with both Peterborough and Cambridge City.
Having finished level on points with Cambridge, a 2-0 play-off victory against the same opponents earned them a place in the final where they faced Tring.
Neither side were able to find the net during normal and extra-time and Jordan Homann, Kieran Whitehall and Tom Richardson all scored their penalty flicks in the shoot-out to earn Luton the trophy.
The U14s finished fourth in their tournament.
Luton beat Bedford B 4-0 and St Neots 3-0, drew 1-1 with Milton Keynes and were beaten 3-1 by Letchworth in their group before going down 4-2 to Peterborough in the semi-finals.
In the third and fourth place play-off, Luton were beaten 3-0 by Bedford A.
