Luton edged out by Marshall MK
Ladies move up to fourth place in Division One
Hard-working Luton AC ladies were just pipped to first place in the third Southern Women's League match at Stockwood Park on Saturday.
The team, supported by Luton Rotary Club, finished in second place, just 3.5 points behind winners Marshall Milton Keynes, as they moved up to fourth place in Division One.
In another closely-contested competition, Milton Keynes finished first with 96 points just ahead of hosts Luton with 92.5.
Herne Hill Harriers were third with 81 and Kingston were fourth with 49.5.
The day got off to a good start for Luton with Emma Hughes and Jonelle Johnson-Turner doing the double in the long jump.
Johnson-Turner also won the B string 100m with Jayne Willock taking first place in the B string 200m.
Daniella Northwood and Nicole Matthew picked up valuable points in the 400m hurdles, with Northwood finishing second in the A string as she took five seconds off her PB.
Karen Vincent won the A string high jump, while Shakira Francis was third in the B string.
Francis also performed well to take first place in the B string triple jump with Johnson-Turner second in the A string.
Shannon Bunker, as usual, was consistently good in the throwing events, with second place finishes in the hammer, discus and javelin, plus a third place in the shot.
With Suzanna Wise unavailable, Bunker was backed up by Willock, Claire Bassill and Johnson-Turner who all added valuable points.
On the track, there was success for Rosie Keane in the B string 800m with Bassill second in the A string.
Luton led by 2.5 points at this stage but, after winning the Luton Five-Mile race the night before, Louise Peters was only able to take third in the 3,000m, with Keane third in the B string.
This moved Milton Keynes 4.5 points ahead with just a few events to go.
Bassill and Peters both claimed runners-up spots in the 1,500m, leaving Luton 3.5 points behind with just the final two relays to come.
Luton's quartet of Johnson-Turner, Hughes, Doody and Willock ran brilliantly to triumph in the 4x100m relay, with Milton Keynes in second place.
But the positions were reversed in the final event of the day, the 4x400m relay, as Milton Keynes held on for victory despite the best efforts of Lewis, Bassill, Keane and Hughes.
Next up is the match at Milton Keynes on July 25.
