Dees bottom but offer hope for better in 2015

Dunstablians turned in a fine second-half performance at Biggleswade on Saturday but it wasn’t enough to avoid a 36-24 defeat.

Although Dees now find themselves bottom of the league, their second-half display should inspire them to go on and play their best rugby after the Christmas break, as they looked like a side that could compete with any team in the league on their day.

The stand-out performer was Toby Mead, who despite being one of the younger players, showed a great level of maturity and looked like a fully-fledged first team player.

The first half didn’t go to plan as Biggleswade were ruthless, capitalising on every one of Dees’ mistakes and racing into an 18-0 lead with three tries and one penalty.

Dunstable got their first points on the board through Mead. The move started from a line-out, which enabled Josh Klymyszyn to pass to Chamberlain, who made a great burst forward to cut open the opposition defence and send Mead over for a try.

The home side extended their lead again with another try making it 23-5 at half time.

Dave Marshall’s side came out with a sense of urgency after the break and displayed more purpose. They continuously looked to push into the opposition half, which eventually paid off when captain Aaron White scored after a well-worked line-out drill.

Despite Dees’ best efforts, they conceded 13 more points from two unconverted-tries and a penalty kick.

Towards the end Dees showed what they are capable of. Despite losing the always-reliable Scott Warren they created numerous chances, from which they scored two tries.

The first came after some clever play opened up the Biggy defence, for Thompson to break through and put winger Max Thorne over.

Then after being held-up on the line twice, Dees drove forward from the scrum at the five metre line and Oliver managed to collect the ball and push over – meaning they picked up a valuable bonus point. Thompson successfully converted, bringing the score to 36-24.

Dunstablians host second-place Wellingborough next on January 10.
