Jones hopeful of a cup upset against table toppers Bedford Athletic

Luton manager Dicky Jones thinks his side may shock some people in their East Midlands Cup semi-final tie against Bedford Athletic this Saturday.

Luton are yet to win a game in 2016 as their only victory this season came against Harrow on December 12, with the exception of a walk-over triumph over Bugbrooke in the quarter-final of the East Midlands Cup.

Meanwhile, visitors Athletic are in fine form this season, eight points clear at the top of Midlands One East, having lost only once in the league this season.

Luton will feature some fresh faces in the side, including 18-year-old Calum Cunningham, a back-row who has been hailed as an exciting prospect by his manager as Jones said: “We’re expecting a strong squad to come out and give us a run for our money. We’re well aware that they have had a great season but we are looking to come and upset them.

“It’s an opportunity to try out some new faces that may not be able to play a full 80 minutes as we have more subs that allows us to roll more.

“Winning the cup, or even getting to the final, would be a huge boost for the club as morale is very low at the moment.

“It’s something we’ve just missed out on recently. Last season we had one hand on the cup in the final against Kettering but lost in the final kick of the game.”

The game at Newlands Road will kick off at 14:30.
