Luton RFC finish on a high with Romford win

Luton RFC ended the London One North season in style as they came from behind to defeat their hosts Romford 17-13 on Saturday.

The game started slowly, before Romford’s Jack MacVeigh opened the scoring after 26 minutes with a penalty.

A strong wind made it almost impossible for kicking and swift passing, but the hosts did move 10-0 ahead on the stroke of half-time when Reece Parr intercepted a loose ball to touch down, with MacVeigh converting.

In the second period, Luton’s passing game was sharper and crisper as they were on the scoreboard when Luke Spellen went over, with Rick Hobbs’ boot making it 10-7.

The visitors’ early momentum was halted when Romford were awarded another penalty and MacVeigh made no mistake.

Luton’s never-say-die attitude was in full swing again as Darren Moore and Chris Parr rang the changes, by bringing on Dwayne Duffy and Tyrone Ashton.

The latter quickly helped to set up a try for Chris Davis in the 54th minute and Hobbs added the extras to put his side in front for the first time.

MacVeigh missed a chance to regain the lead for Romford by missing a penalty and Luton made sure of the points with eight minutes left thanks to a kick from Hobbs.

The result saw Luton finish the season in 10th place as skills coach Parr said: “We made very hard work of it.

“In saying that Romford is never an easy place to come, we always expect them to be competitive.

“While we respect that they are a tough outfit, I think we made hard work of things and didn’t really execute as well as we could have at times.”

Luton have one last game left, the East Midlands Cup final against Midlands One East side Kettering next Wednesday at Goldington Road.
