Dunstable theatre celebrates first birthday
Although many people living in Dunstable complained it was a cinema the town needed rather than a theatre, in its first 12 months the new venue has proved it could well be a storming success.

The mailing list has steadily climbed to an impressive 22,000 people and in its first eight months, the theatre generated nearly £1.5 million in ticket sales.

Since its opening, more than 77,000 tickets have sold for shows at the new theatre, including 20,000 tickets for its first pantomime Peter Pan, starring Brian Blessed.

But the most important factor is the impressive building has been accepted into the Dunstable fold.

Grove Theatre general manager Jo Ditch said: "One lady said that the theatre has put the heartbeat back in to Dunstable, which I thought was really nice.

"It's been a long time since Dunstable has had a theatre and I was a little concerned when the building was first built, but there was no need to be worried."

Today's Vote

Should worldwide tours of the Olympic flame be abandoned to stop giving protestors an easy target
Yes, it's a pointless stunt anyway and would not be missed
No, you can't give in to bully tactics from any quarter
Bring on more protests, they are more entertaining than the sport
