Wearing a clown outfit his mum bought on Amazon and with his face painted Pierrot-style, 10-year-old Luke McQuillan will make his big top debut at Circus Wonderland this weekend.
The young lad from Lewsey Farm – who’s already an adept juggler, plate spinner and unicyclist – has wanted to join the circus ever since he can remember. And now he’s been given the chance of a lifetime.
The Ferrars Junior pupil can’t keep the grin off his face as he admits: “It really is a dream come true.”
He’ll be appearing alongside musical clowns Popol and Kakehole, who were his inspiration as a tiny tot.
“I saw them when I was about four,” he recalled. “They made me laugh and I wanted to be a part of them.”
Mum Linda, a ward clerk at the Luton&Dunstable Hospital maternity unit, said: “We’re really proud of him.
“He taught himself and he practises all the time. The school thinks it’s great too – he’s even done an assembly.”
Popol – aka Paul Carpenter – said: “You don’t realise what an impact you have on the children who come to the show and it’s wonderful to know we inspired him.”
Luke will have a five minute slot on the Saturday matinee.
He said: “It’s so exciting when the lights are on you and everything. I wanted to be a policeman when I grew up but that’s boring.”
According to his mum, Luke’s dad Stuart is also a bit of a clown: “But in a different way.”
