The UK Centre for Carnival Arts will be the coolest – and the hottest! - place in town next month when it’s transformed into a mini Rio de Janeiro for the Brazilian Carnival Encontro.
Back by popular demand for the third year running, this spectacular event features an incredible line-up of samba, percussion, dance and singing workshops plus outstanding performances from some of the UK’s most inspiring carnival artists.
Brazilian Carnival Encontro 2013 is a celebration of Brazil’s carnival which is now an annual attraction at the Centre, drawing audiences from all over Europe and Brazil.
It kicks off on Friday, September 6 with a welcome party hosted by DJ Calum Jaden and Rhythms of the City.
This will be followed by back-to-back workshops on Saturday and Sunday when carnival aficianados can sign up for professional tuition to suit every level of ability.
Try your hand at the cavaquinho – the four-stringed Brazilian equivalent of the ukelele – or bang out a rhymthm on the pandeiro, a percussion instrument similar to the tambourine.
You can also enrol for the samba passista dance masterclass with Paula de Hollanda.
Highlight of the weekend is the Saturday Night Showcase Party when Umpatacum, Ilu Axe, Maracatudo Mafua and Carnival Collective take to the stage to get everyone in the Rio spirit.
Authentic Brazilian food will be available, alongside Caipirinha cocktails. There is also a free programme of street performances. Tickets range from £5 for the welcome party to £13 for certain workshops.
