A standing ovation for former Luton Sixth Form College student Joe Louis Robinson.

The 21-year-old from Leagrave is the youngest musical director on the West End stage - and credits teachers Ross and Mel Purves for his success.

“They were fabulous,” he said. “They really started me off on the road to fame and fortune.”

Joe Louis has a busy weekend ahead - he’s MD of Christmas in New York which will be presented at the Palace Theatre in Manchester on Saturday (December 7) before transferring to the Palace in London on Monday (December 9).

He’s just returned from a whirlwind trip to New York where he was MD for You Tube artist Christina Bianco, playing legendary venues like Birdland, 54 Below and Triad.

The boy who started playing the piano when he was six and wrote an award-winning show for St Andrew’s Players in 2010 is also MD for drag artist Velma Celli and regularly appears with her at Leicester Square’s Hippodrome.

Joe Louis still has a soft spot for his home town and thinks there’s great talent here.

“But Luton really does need a proper theatre,” he said.
