Street entertainment with an American flavour will come to Luton on Saturday, July 4.

Luton Business Improvement District (BID) will be staging the event to encourage people back into the town centre.

It will be held between 11am and 3pm with a host of artists performing live music, comedy and street theatre in the BID area.

The roving street entertainment will take place in key parts of the town centre including Bute Street, The Mall, Market Hill and St George’s Square.

Acts so far confirmed include rock ‘n’ roll trio Lucille who recently signed to Hoodwink Recordings and have just released their debut album.

Vintage vocalist Rebecca Jayne will entertain visitors with a repertoire of swing and timeless classics.

Street entertainer Charlie Wheelz will bring the glamour and energy of the American diner with her comedy roller waitress act.

And the day will be compered by Dapper Dan who will introduce the acts and interact with the audiences throughout the day.

Gavin O’Brien from creative agency Clearhead is chairman of the Luton BID board. He said: “Extensive research was carried out among local businesses and visitors about their perceptions of Luton town centre and improvements they wanted made.

“A recurring theme was that they wanted more vibrancy and entertainment in the streets to create a fun and enjoyable atmosphere that would encourage more people back to the town centre.

“July 4 is the first event of a monthly summer programme to do just that and I hope that people will take this opportunity to bring the whole family along to enjoy the fun atmosphere.

“It is particularly timely that the programme is launching on the day that celebrates the value of independent businesses – who play such an important role in Luton town centre – and American Independence Day which has given us a state-side theme for much of the entertainment.”

Further events are planned for July 25, August 8, September 5 and October 3.
