Aguilar in line-up for music fest

LEIGHTON singer-songwriter Gemma Aguilar is just one of the acts headlining at The Grove’s first ever Music Fest taking place this month.

On September 17 the theatre will raise the roof, showcasing the very best of the area’s talent.

The event, at the Court Drive venue, will also support Cancer Research UK, with a percentage of the proceeds from ticket sales going to the charity.

Gemma, who has opened for Blue and has a string of appearances on BBC radio behind her, has been writing her own material since she was a teenager. She has been hitting the gig circuit with a vengence clocking up more than 50 gigs in 18 months and has been promoting her EP It’s My Life.

Also on the bill is country music singer Cliff Aubrey, who holds the Guinness World Record for a 24-hour songathon. He’ll be accompanied by his three nephews on backing vocals. There’s also Karl Johnson, who supported Nickelback and Bon Jovi at the MK Bowl in 2006.

In 2009 he began writing music with local musician Mark Harding, who he met shortly after the Bon Jovi gig. Mark is currently a guitar teacher and has worked as a session musician.

They describe their sound as melodic rock music and are currently mixing their debut album in New Zealand, tracks from which will be performed at Grove Music Fest 2011.

Joining the line-up is The Dave Vegas Project, originally a two-piece formed in 2009, guitarist Dave Vegas and drummer Drew Rose started writing music together after playing some impromptu after parties in their home town of Northampton.

They are no strangers to Dunstable, having just played Party In The Park on the MMG Stage in July.

Imicus, who have played at Download Festival and Hammerfest, as well as playing headline tours to support their debut album Animal Factory, are also on the bill.

Their single Visceral is currently being aired on music channels Scuzz and Kerrang, and they are working on their second album.

Social Status, from Milton Keynes – described by BBC Introducing... as “fresh and unique” – will grace the stage along with four-piece band Subset, who pride themselves on their stripped-down ‘plug in and play’ style of music.

Dunstable band Dutch Order com-plete the line-up as well as teenage rock and metal band As Daylight Dies and popular four-piece Rubber Cindy, who offer a combination of indie and surf rock.

Grove general manager Jo Ditch said: “Grove Theatre is delighted to be staging the first- ever Grove Music Fest. It is a great opportunity for local acts to perform on a professional stage to a paying audience.

“We hope that the local community will come and support this fantastic event in aid of Cancer Research UK.”

The gig starts at 6pm and will run until 11pm. Tickets from the box office on 01582 602080 or online at www.grovetheatre.co.uk
