Celebrating Saint George

Wrest Park’s annual St George’s Festival takes place on the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, April 25 and 26.

It’s English Heritage’s largest and longest running celebratory event, with a host of entertainers marking 2,000 years of history.

The highlight will be gallant St George’s attempts to slay the dragon.

But there’ll be lots else on offer including medieval jousting, a Redcoat cavalry display to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo and a specially commissioned play in honour of Magna Carta’s 800th anniversary.

In addition visitors will be able to see a breathtaking display of falconry and beautiful birds of prey, and compare archery and the might of the longbow with the firepower of medieval soldiers.

They can also discover the sophisticated art of Victorian side-saddle riding.

There’ll be fun and games with Peterkin the jester, Punch and Judy shows and hobby horse jousting for all those budding St Georges.

A colourful living history encampment will provide a rolling programme of entertainment each day with an authentic market to wander around and a variety of catering outlets offering dragon biscuits and a JollyJouster punch.
