The perenially popular musical – based on the Charles Dickens novel – is being staged by Luton’s Phoenix Players and directed by Jackie Hensley, aka mum of Jaymi from Union J.

You could even follow in Jaymi’s famous footsteps - he played the Artful Dodger in a previous production.

Producers Barry and Laura Hyde are “extremely excited” to be part of such a legendary theatrical experience.

Barry said: “It relies heavily on a young cast of street urchins – boys preferably, but girls are more than acceptable – and of course Oliver himself.

“In our quest for the best, we intend to hold a series of open auditions.

“We’re very keen to audition from in and around the talent bases of Luton, Dunstable and surrounding areas so if there’s a wannabe Nancy or an evil Bill Sykes lurking about, we want to hear from them.”

Laura added: “In order for our Oliver! to be a success, we need to ensure we have a fantastic cast – and the only way to get that cast on board is to see as many people as possible.”

Auditions will take place at Trinity Church Hall at 7.30pm on Monday June 2 and Friday June 6 and at 1.30pm on Sunday June 8 at the L&D Social Club in Calnwood Road.

Laura described Oliver! as “an iconic show like no other . . . from its musical score – including Where is Love, Oom Pah Pah, Consider Yourself and the poignant As Long as He Needs Me – to fabulous Dickensian characters like Fagin, Nancy, the Artful Dodger and of course Oliver Twist.

“It’s an emotive story portraying the gritty realism of life in London in days gone by and we relish the opportunity of putting it on for Luton audiences to come, see and enjoy.”
Oliver! will be at Luton Library Theatre during October half term, from October 30 to November 1.
