Signing stars are in demand

The award-winning Bramingham Signing Stars are shooting to success.

The unique 15-strong collective of adults with learning difficulties is already heavily booked for the festive season.

And Bramingham Centre day care officer Najwa Bennett, who’s responsible for teaching the group to perform Makaton signs to music – said the demand has been amazing.

“They’ve appeared at the Grove Theatre and Methodist churches in Luton, Dunstable and Leighton Buzzard,” she said. “They were also in Stopsley when the Olympic torch came through.

“They really, really enjoy themselves and in the past couple of years they’ve become even more confident.

“They hold hands and dance and ask people to join in the singing.”

Bramingham Super Stars have a repertoire of about 70 songs, ranging from pop numbers to classics and old favourites.

Najwa said: “I learn the tunes and lyrics, then introduce them word by word and line by line. We practise every Monday.

“It’s lovely to see them – their faces glow with excitement and happiness.”
