Bazaar and Rummage tells the tale of Katrina, Bell-Bell and Margaret, who have formed a self-help group to deal with their anxiety, and want to run a jumble sale in the local church hall.

The sale has been organised by their social workers, young trainee Fliss and ex-agoraphobic volunteer Gwenda. But as the afternoon progresses, the distinction between them and the anxious people they’re supposed to be looking after becomes less and less clear.

The play is written by Sue Townsend, best known for her Adrian Mole books, and is being staged by Dunstable Rep at The Little Theatre.

Director Julie Foster said: “I first came across this play a few years ago when my friend invited me to go and see her playing the part of Fliss.

“I found the characters so engaging and have wanted to direct it ever since.

“Whilst researching the play I found out that it’s actually slightly autobiographical as the author Sue Townsend suffered from agoraphobia herself for a short while.

“In her case the symptoms disappeared as soon as she worked out what was causing them – she hated the place she was living in.”

The production runs from Friday, March 10, to Saturday, March 18.
