It is the story of Tracey Turnblad, the girl with big hair and an even bigger heart whose one passion is to dance, but behind the catchy songs and energy-packed dances of this ever popular musical is a serious message about diversity and racial integration in 60s America.

DAOS are delighted to be the first Musical Theatre group allowed to present this great musical, and you can see it at The Grove Theatre on both Friday May 15 and Saturday May 16.

The show revolves around Tracey (Lucy O’Hare) and her love interest, Link Larkin (James Halling). She befriends soul singer Motormouth Maybelle (Rachel Parkins) who is the ultimate party-throwing hostess for the black community. T

racey helps her daughter, Lil’ Inez (Kes Browne) to get her turn in the spotlight and transform a world of closed minds into one where everyone is valued, whatever the colour of their skin, or the size of their hair-do! Maybelle’s son, Seaweed J. Stubbs (Damien Winchester), whose stylish dancing and mega personality act like a magnet on young, impressionable Tracey.

Other characters include Tracey’s parents, the ever-loving Edna (Paul Ramsey) and big-hearted Wilbur Turnblad (Chris Young); Penny Pingleton (Kirsty Day) who is Tracey’s best friend and biggest supporter; and hit show host Corny Collins (Simon Rollings) – corny by name and corny by nature. And don’t forget scheming mother and daughter Velma and Amber Von Tussle (Lisa Abella and Katie Ross) whose world is about to be challenged by a whole new order of things.

The creative team include director, Alistair Brown, artistic director and choreographer, Ashley Mead and the team is completed by music director Beth Thomas.
