MP cuts cake under clock tower as Dunstable 'Third Age' group celebrates 25th Birthday

Dunstable’s u3a has kicked off their Birthday celebrations as local MP Alex Mayer cut their 25th anniversary cake at a stall by the town’s clock tower.

Chair Bernie Naughton gave the local MP a potted history of the group’s first quarter of a century. Established in 1999, the branch of u3a (University of the Third Age) is now one the largest charitable organisations in Dunstable and Houghton Regis with over 800 members who meet monthly. Gardening, yoga, tai chi, art, poetry, walking and languages are just some of the 81 activities organised by the thriving charity for the town’s older residents or “3rd agers”. Speaking at the event Alex Mayer MP, said: “Happy 25th Birthday! It was great to celebrate with Bernie and her team of dedicated trustees. It’s clear that members are making the most of life in what’s clearly such a friendly atmosphere. From Walking to Talking - German to Golf - Choir to Country Dancing - Philosophy to Photography there’s something for everyone. Here’s to the next quarter century.” u3a’s birthday market stall will return to the town centre tomorrow (Saturday 14 September) where locals can sign up to get involved, followed on Monday 16 September at 12.30 by an event with tea and music at The Square, Dunstable. Chair Bernie Naughton said the vibrant branch welcomed anyone who wanted to join. “Excitement is building as the Dunstable u3a 25th Anniversary weekend approaches. Under the iconic Town Clock, Local MP Alex Mayer, launched the celebrations to make this a very special and memorable occasion for our members.”
