Due to the coronavirus pandemic, A Level results are based on teacher assessments rather than exams.

There are fears up to 40% of these assessments have been downgraded by the exam regulator's algorithm, with pupils in socially deprived areas the worst hit.

Cardinal Newman School headteacher Andrew Bull said: "I couldn’t be prouder of our Year 13 Students and the results that they have achieved.

"We have three students going to Cambridge this year, as well as a huge number attending the universities of their choice.

"We have some that we are supporting in ensuring that they achieve a place considering the changes in the awarding of results over the past 2 days but we are confident that they will move onto the next steps that they want.

"There is a slight improvement in out A*/A grades and the rest currently are in line with last year’s achievements. These will no doubt improve over the coming days and weeks once the revised appeals process is made clear.

"I am delighted with all the results so far and I thank the Sixth Form team led by Miss Blackbird and all of her staff for the hard work that they have put in to get the students to this place!"
