Coronavirus: UK schools to close on Friday until further notice

UK schools will shut their doors on Friday until further notice as the country goes into lockdown over coronavirus.

Education secretary Gavin Williamson made the announcement in the House on Commons at 5.15pm.

In a subsequent press briefing, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that children should not be left with grandparents or with older relatives who may be particularly vulnerable.

He went on to "thank the whole country" for their efforts to comply with social distancing to keep people safe.

It is unknown yet how long the school closures will last.

The announcement follows days of uncertainty, with groups of Luton pupils increasingly told to stay home from school.

Ashcroft High School was closed for year 7 and 8 pupils today (Wednesday) after a teacher self-isolated. Putteridge High School has also already asked year 8 and 9 pupils to stay home due to rising staff absence.

Lady Zia Wernher School closed its doors today for a month-long break. King’s House Prepatory School in Leagrave also announced yesterday it would close on Friday.
