Demo over union studies threat

Members of Luton Trades Union Council and the Luton People’s Assembly gathered outside the campus, in Kingsway, on Monday, October 21.

They say trade union studies have been provided at the campus for more than 25 years but are now at risk.

If the studies are axed, Unite officer Richard Gates says that would leave “a massive gap” in the provision of workplace training in an area where it is “badly needed”.

A college spokesperson said: “The college works very closely with community and business organisations to ensure that the courses it offers are best suited to meeting the needs of employers and therefore providing students with the best chances of employment.

“This is the college’s mission. As a public-funded organisation, we must work within finite resources and not attempt to be all things to all people. Our decision on the future of these courses will be announced to staff before we make any further public statements.”
