Sundon school is on the right track

The school was placed in special measures in January 2015 and since then the staff have worked hard to improve both the learning environment and outcomes for pupils. The school developed a robust plan of improvement including eradicating inadequate teaching and the employment of a deputy head teacher and two additional assistant head teachers.

While the overall outcome of the inspection is that the school ‘requires improvement to be good’, the report rated the personal behaviour, development and welfare of the pupils to be ‘good’. The inspector noted that the pupils felt safe and well cared for, they are respectful of others and that they wanted to attend school.

Jenny Wightman, Headteacher, said: “We are pleased that Ofsted has recognised the hard work of our staff and governors since the school was placed in special measures. However, we recognise that there are still areas that we need to improve. We look forward to building on this progress by continuing to work hard to improve the school experience and outcomes for our pupils.”

Cllr Mahmood Hussain, Portfolio Holder for children and young people, said: “Well done to Sundon Park Junior School for coming out of special measures so quickly. It is clear from the Ofsted report that the staff and governors have worked tirelessly to ensure standards at the school have been raised. Whilst the school recognises there are still improvements to be made, the quick turnaround is testament to the hard work of the school staff, local authority officers and local supporting schools.”
