Coronavirus latest: 117 new cases confirmed in Luton today

117 new coronavirus infections have been confirmed in Luton over the past 24 hours, according to figures from Public Health England.

The total number of cases in the borough now stands at 4,397 (+117).

The case rate in Luton currently stands at 257.7 per 100,000.

Elsewhere in the county, Central Bedfordshire has 2,946 (+60) cases, while Bedford's figure stands at 2,790 (+41).

There have been 1,317,496 lab-confirmed cases across the UK, up by a daily rise of 27,301.

51,304 deaths have been recorded within 28 days of a positive coronavirus test, with 376 added today.

The UK entered its second lockdown on Thursday of last week, to be reviewed every four weeks.

The government hopes the restrictions will stem the rising tide in new cases.

A vaccine being prepared by pharmaceutical firm Pfizer has been reported to be 90% effective in preventing the virus, but remains in development. Other vaccine trials are taking place in hospitals around the UK.
