Coronavirus latest: 146 new cases in Luton over weekend

146 new coronavirus infections were confirmed in Luton over the weekend, according to figures from Public Health England.

The total number of cases in the borough now stands at 3,438 (+146).

73 new infections were confirmed on Saturday, with another 73 yesterday (Sunday).

Elsewhere in the county, Central Bedfordshire has 2,431 (+101) cases, while Bedford's figure stands at 2,391 (+60).

There have been 1,034,914 lab-confirmed cases across the UK, up by 23,254.

46,717 deaths have been recorded within 28 days of a positive test, with a rise of 162 deaths yesterday (Sunday).

Last week, it was announced that Luton would move into "high alert level" Tier-2 of the government's coronavirus restrictions.

However, soon after this came into effect on Saturday, it was announced that the entire country would enter a national four-week lockdown beginning on Thursday.

The government hopes a lockdown will help stem the rising tide of new Covid-19 cases, with the situation to be reviewed every four weeks.
