Coronavirus latest: 22 new cases confirmed in Luton today

The total number of cases in the borough now stands at 2,026 (+22).

This week has seen record numbers of new Covid-19 cases in Luton, with 32 new infections on Monday, 12 on Tuesday, 28 on Wednesday, 27 on Thursday and 17 on Friday.

Elsewhere in the county, Central Bedfordshire has 1,532 (+9) cases, while Bedford's figure stands at 1,619 (+7).

There have been 429,277 lab-confirmed cases in the UK, up by 6,042 today.

The number of Covid-19 associated UK deaths has been recorded as 41,971 - rising by 34 since yesterday.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced new restrictions which came into effect on Thursday to curb the rising tide in new Covid-19 infections across the country.

Pubs and restaurants must close by 10pm and are required to offer table service only, with customers wearing masks except when eating and drinking.

The move has been criticised as "devastating" by the UK hospitality centre, but the PM has warned that restrictions may be toughened up further if the number of new infections continues to increase.
