Coronavirus latest: 52 new cases confirmed in Luton

52 new coronavirus infections have been confirmed in Luton over the past 24 hours, according to figures from Public Health England.

The total number of cases in the borough now stands at 4,779 (+52).

The case rate in Luton currently stands at 285.8 per 100,000.

Elsewhere in the county, Central Bedfordshire has 3,145 (+17) cases while Bedford's figure stands at 2,928 (+18).

There have been 1,430,341 lab-confirmed cases across the UK, up by a daily rise of 19,609.

53,274 deaths have been recorded within 28 days of a positive coronavirus test, with 529 added today.

It was reported on Monday that the UK government has ordered 5m doses of the Moderna vaccine - the third latest medication to be announced in the fight against Covid-19.

With a claimed success rate of 94.5%, Moderna is potentially even more effective than the Pfizer vaccine being developed in the US, which reportedly has a success rate over 90%.
