Coronavirus latest: 53 new cases confirmed in Luton today

53 new coronavirus infections have been confirmed in Luton over the past 24 hours, according to figures from Public Health England.

The total number of cases in the borough now stands at 3,950 (+53)

Elsewhere in the county, Central Bedfordshire has 2,726 (+30) cases, while Bedford's figure stands at 2,599 (+20).

There have been 1,192,013 lab-confirmed cases across the UK, up by 20,572.

49,044 deaths have been recorded within 28 days of a positive test, with a daily rise of 156.

The UK entered its second lockdown on Thursday, to be reviewed after four weeks.

The government hopes the restrictions will stem the rising tide in new cases.
