Coronavirus latest: 53 new cases as Luton reaches 3,000 milestone

53 new coronavirus infections have been confirmed in Luton over the past 24 hours, according to figures from Public Health England.

The total number of cases in the borough now stands at 3,015 (+53)

Saturday saw 32 new cases confirmed in Luton, with another 54 yesterday (Sunday).

Elsewhere in the county, Central Bedfordshire has 2,180 (+34) cases, while Bedford's figure stands at 2,210 (+14).

There have been 894,690 lab-confirmed cases across the UK, up by 20,890 in the past 24 hours.

44,998 deaths have been recorded within 28 days of a positive test, with another 102 people reported to have died.

Luton Borough Council leader, Cllr Hazel Simmons, warned last week that the town is in the grip of a "real public health crisis" due to rising Covid-19 figures.

Members of the public are urged to avoid meeting with others outside their own household.

If the number of cases continues to rise, Luton may soon be pushed into Tier 2 restrictions, the council has stated.
