Coronavirus latest: Another spike of 28 cases confirmed in Luton today

A spike of 28 new coronavirus cases has been confirmed in Luton today (Wednesday), just two days after a record 32 new cases was recorded on Monday.

The total number of cases in the borough now stands at 1,960 (+28).

Yesterday (Tuesday) saw 12 new cases, with 32 on Monday.

Elsewhere in the county, Central Bedfordshire has 1,491 (+6) cases, while Bedford's figure stands at 1,582 (+15).

There have been 409,729 lab-confirmed cases in the UK, rising by 6,178 since yesterday.

The number of Covid-19 associated UK deaths has been recorded as 41,862 - rising by 37 for a second day running.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced new restrictions to curb the rising tide in new Covid-19 infections across the country.

Pubs will be required to offer table service only, and must close by 10pm.

The move has been criticised as "devastating" by the UK hospitality centre, but the PM has warned that restrictions may be toughened up even further if the number of new infections continues to increase.
