Coronavirus latest: Luton figures rise again with 16 new cases in past 24 hours

Luton has recorded 16 new cases of coronavirus in the past 24 hours, according to statistics from Public Health England.

It follows a week of tumultuous ups and downs in the borough's daily COVID-19 figures.

There was a three-day peak of 52 instances between Thursday and Saturday, before returning to zero cases on Sunday and Monday (yesterday).

The previous week had been relatively stable, with an increase of just two over seven days.

In other parts of the county, Central Bedfordshire has 625 (+6) cases while Bedford had 611 (+2).

NHS England figures show 235 people had died in hospital at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust as of 5pm on Monday (May 25) – rising by 27 over the past week.

A week ago, there had been 208 deaths recorded.

Of 188 trusts in England,Luton and Dunstable Hospital trust has the 36th-highest death toll.

Across the country, 265,227 people have been diagnosed with coronavirus - an increase of 2,004 since yesterday.

There have been 37,048 UK deaths associated with COVID-19, with 134 recorded in the past 24 hours.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced yesterday that non-essential retail can trade again from Monday, June 15.

The PM's coronavirus briefing had been delayed to allow a press conference from senior advisor Dominic Cummings, whose Durham trip last month continues to dominate headlines.

Following Mr Cummings' alleged breach, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said today the government would "look at" fines given to families accused of breaking lockdown rules to get childcare.
