Coronavirus latest: No new cases confirmed in Luton in past 24 hours

No new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in Luton over the past 24 hours, according to Public Health England.

The total number of cases in the borough remains at 834.

Elsewhere in the county, Central Bedfordshire has 757 (+10) cases while Bedford's figure has risen to 791 (+15).

There have been no new coronavirus-related deaths reported at Luton & Dunstable Hospital today.

NHS England figures show 274 people with the disease have died at the L&D as of 5pm on Monday, June 22.

Across the country, there have been 306,210 infections at an increase of 874 over the past 24 hours.

A total of 42,927 people have died with coronavirus in the UK, up by 171 since yesterday.

Today, Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed pubs and restaurants could reopen on July 4 with a one-metre social distancing rule in place, among other measures.

Chief medical officer Prof Chris Whitty has warned of the risk of a second wave of infection if the revised rules are not followed.

Prof Whitty said the UK could be living with the virus for a long time.

He added: "I would be surprised and delighted if we weren’t in this current situation through the winter and into next spring.
