Coronavirus latest: No new cases in Luton in past 24 hours

There have been no new confirmed cases of coronavirus in Luton in the past 24 hours, according to statistics from Public Health England.

It means the total number of cases in the borough still stands at 784.

Elsewhere in the county, Central Bedfordshire has 676 (+1) cases while Bedford has 697 (+2).

Across the UK, 287,299 people have been diagnosed with COVID-19 up by 1,204 since yesterday.

55 people with the virus have died in the past 24 hours - the lowest since March 22 - bringing the country's death toll to 40,597.

There were also no COVID-19 related deaths recorded in London or Scotland today.

At today's coronavirus daily briefing, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the virus was "in retreat" and that numbers dying in care homes had dropped significantly since the peak of the pandemic in late April.

Mr Hancock said: “I know personally what an anxious time it is, and it has been, for anyone with a loved one in social care."

He added that the government's 'whole care home' testing service would be rolled out across England and Wales' 6,000 care homes.

Office for National Statistics (ONS) data show care home deaths have accounted for 29.1% of all COVID-19 related deaths in the UK.
