Coronavirus latest: Three new cases brings Luton total to 803

Three new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in Luton over the past 24 hours, according to Public Health England.

It brings the total number of infections in the borough to 803.

Luton's infection rate is 375 per 100,000, which places it 29th-highest of 150 local authorities in England and Wales.

Elsewhere in the county, Central Bedfordshire has 693 (+9) cases while Bedford's figure is at 714 (+11).

There have also been three new coronavirus-related deaths reported at Luton & Dunstable Hospital today.

NHS England figures show 268 people had died at the L&D Hospital as of 5pm on Wednesday, June 10. Of 188 hospital trusts in England, the L&D has the 29th highest death toll.

Across the country, there have been 291,409 infections at an increase of 1,266 over the past 24 hours.

A total of 41,279 people have died with coronavirus in the UK, up by 151 since yesterday.

At today's coronavirus daily briefing, Health Secretary Matt Hancock faced a grilling over the Test and Trace programme.

"Test and trace is our radar", said Mr Hancock, as he urged the public to participate. "You have your part to play."

8,117 people who tested positive for Covid-19 in England had their case transferred to the NHS Test and Trace contact tracing system, of whom just 5,407 (67%) were reached, while 2,710 (33%) were not reached.
