Coronavirus latest: Two new cases diagnosed in Luton brings town's total to 805

Two new coronavirus cases have emerged in Luton over the past 24 hours, according to Public Health England.

It brings the total number of infections in the borough to 805.

Luton's infection rate is 376 per 100,000, which places it 29th-highest of 150 local authorities in England and Wales.

Elsewhere in the county, Central Bedfordshire has 697 (+4) cases while Bedford's figure is at 716 (+2).

There have also been no new coronavirus-related deaths reported at Luton & Dunstable Hospital since yesterday.

NHS England figures show 268 people had died at the L&D Hospital as of 5pm on Wednesday, June 10. Of 188 hospital trusts in England, the L&D has the 29th highest death toll.

Across the country, there have been 292,950 infections at an increase of 1,541 over the past 24 hours.

A total of 41,481 people have died with coronavirus in the UK, up by 202 since yesterday.

At today's coronavirus daily briefing, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps denied that the country's chief nurse was dropped from Downing Street briefings after she refused to back Dominic Cummings.

Ruth May, the chief nursing officer for England, was allegedly dropped from television conferences after declining to publicly support Mr Cummings.

Mr Shapps reiterated the government message that face masks will be mandatory from Monday, June 15, and anyone who fails to comply could face a £1,000 fine.
