Last week the government announced that Luton was no longer considered an area of special concern following an outbreak at the end of July, but Luton Borough Council is urging the public not to become complacent.

Face masks must still be worn in shops and on public transport, while the two metre social distancing guidelines remain in place.

Councillor Khtija Malik, portfolio holder for public health, said: “Moving off the government watch list was positive news for the town and is testament to the efforts of all Luton residents who have made great efforts to reduce the spread of Covid-19.

"Thank you also for the huge numbers of local people who came forward to get tested which has helped us manage local outbreaks.

“Unfortunately there has been a recent rise in cases in Luton and for this reason it is absolutely essential we stick to these new national guidelines for our safety and the protection of family and friends.”

The following rules were introduced nationally on Sunday:

> People from other households must not meet in groups of more than six, both indoors and outdoors;

> Members of the same family who live in different households must not gather together in groups of more than six;

> Any household or support bubble of more than six people will still be allowed to gather together;

> Gyms, hospitality venues, restaurants and places of worship that are Covid-secure may hold more than six people, but they cannot mix in groups larger than six;

> Police may issue penalties for anyone not obeying these rules.

Public health officials warn that the safest place to meet people is outdoors while sticking to social distancing rules of at least two metres from anyone not in the same household or support bubble, even if they are part of your family.

Anyone with coronavirus symptoms is urged to self-isolate and book a test. There are nationwide difficulties in booking tests and members of the public are asked to persevere and keep checking back as new test slots become available. Call 111 only in the event of an emergency.
