Bedfordshire's Neighbourhood Watch Network (NHWN) has paid tribute to a 'fantastic nurse' from the Luton and Dunstable Hospital who has died with Covid-19.

Pregnant Mary Agyeiwaa Agyapong, 28, worked as a nurse on a general ward at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital for five years.

After falling ill with coronavirus, Ms Agyapong was admitted to the hospital herself on Sunday, April 5.

Her baby, a little girl, was delivered successfully by emergency caesarian on Sunday and is understood to be doing well. But tragically, Ms Agyepong died that day.

A spokesperson for NHWN said: "I was saddened to hear the news of a pregnant Nurse from the L&D who has died from Covid 19.

"Mary Agyeiwaa Agyapong worked for the L&D for 5 years I understand and was regarded as a fantastic nurse and a credit to the profession.

"Her baby was born prior to her passing which was good news although she will never know the love of her mother whilst growing up,very sad.

"My condolences go out to her family and friends at this difficult time."

The NHWN is encouraging the public to continue with the weekly clapping for the NHS and other care workers who are giving so much during this crisis, tonight, and every Thursday at 8pm.

The spokesperson added: "Lets hope some sort of memorial to all the medics and carers who have so unselfishly lost their lives whilst protecting and caring for us will be erected after this virus has been defeated.
