The Bedfordshire Police chief has urged residents to continue to play their part in the battle against coronavirus.

Chief Superintendent John Murphy said: “Over the past 12 months, the Covid-19 pandemic has proved to be a huge challenge for all of us. It has affected us all individually and sadly so many people have lost their lives to this virus.

“We know the sacrifices people have had to make and we are extremely grateful to those who have played their part in helping to slow the spread of the virus, which has ultimately protected the NHS and saved many lives.

“As a police force, we have been tirelessly working alongside our partners to ensure that people have been complying with the regulations at the various different stages of the pandemic. Our officers have had to adapt the way they deliver policing and we are proud to work with our communities who always show such resilience and cohesiveness in times of need.

“A year on and although we are currently still in a third national lockdown, there is good news ahead as cases are continuing to drop across the county. The government has set out its roadmap out of lockdown and a huge number of our residents have received their first dose of the coronavirus vaccine.

“However now is not a time to be complacent – although restrictions are being eased over the coming weeks, it will take some time to return to life before the pandemic.

“We know the vast majority of our residents are playing their part and sticking to the rules and would urge people to continue to remember hands, face, space and help us continue to keep Bedfordshire safe.”
