The elderly man was admitted to the Lister Hospital in Stevenage suffering from coronavirus as well as a kidney infection.

The hospital has currently banned all visits to protect patients during the pandemic.

However the man's family say they have been warned by doctors and nurses that he could die, and they are pleading for at least one relative to be allowed to visit.

His granddaughter stated: "We are not allowed to visit him and surely it is not right for us to bear this pain mentally... as it may be our last time with him.

"It also creates a worry for my granddad as it can cause him to feel distressed mentally and he does not deserve this.

"My granddad does not use technology and has limited knowledge of how to use a mobile phone.

"I feel that as a family we are being made to bear a mentally damaging set of rules that can be avoided."

A spokesperson for East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, which runs Lister Hospital, said: “Visitor restrictions have been put in place at our hospitals to protect the safety of our patients and staff. This is in line with national guidance.

“We appreciate the impact this will have on those wishing to visit loved ones, but patient and staff safety is our first priority.”
