Luton & Dunstable Hospital has NO electric car charging points for staff, patients and visitors

If you’ve got an electric car and you plan on visiting the hospital any time soon, make sure you’re fully charged.

In an investigation by Cinch, data from NHS Estates Returns Information Collection (ERIC) shows a huge portion of hospitals have no access to electric car chargers.

And Luton is one of them.

Currently, there are 1,445 spaces at the hospital – and ZERO electric car charging points for staff, patients and visitors.

Nearby Bedford doesn’t fare much better.

Currently, there are just FOUR electric car charging points out of 1,460 spaces.

Whereas, down the road at Milton Keynes Hospital, there are 101 chargers.

Ben Welham, Cinch’s motoring expert, said: “It’s surprising to see some major hospital trusts still reporting no EV charging at all, particularly when they operate multiple sites."

For staff working long shifts and patients who rely on driving to attend appointments, on-site charging can save the stress of needing to plan an alternative charging location.

Ben added: “For staff, patients and their visitors, knowing you’ll be able to charge up when you’re there is one less thing to worry about.

“As more drivers switch to electric vehicles, expanding charging in everyday locations like hospitals is a key element of making that transition easy.”

A spokesman for Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust – which runs both Bedford Hospital and Luton & Dunstable Hospital – said: “Due to the ongoing construction work on both hospital sites, we are not currently in a position to install any additional EV charging spaces.”
