Luton Borough Council has urged residents to report such practices to their Trading Standards team, at [email protected].

Councillor Aslam Khan, portfolio holder with responsibility for Trading Standards, said: “This will not be the first time Luton has pulled together to show its strength as a community, and we are calling on our residents now to help us look after the most vulnerable by playing their part.

“You can do this, first and foremost, by following the latest advice of the government and Public Health England about what to do as the virus spreads. We will be posting regular updates at luton.gov.uk/coronavirus.

“But we are also calling on everyone to think of others.

“This includes asking shoppers to resist the temptation to panic buy and stockpile, potentially leaving our most vulnerable residents without essential supplies.

“It also includes shops and business owners not taking advantage of these unprecedented times by profiteering from the fears of those in our community.

“We do appreciate this is a challenging time for businesses and there is support and advice given on our website.

“But business owners have a responsibility to think carefully about pricing and the impact on both their reputation and the community during these difficult times. Many customers will be vulnerable, elderly, on low incomes and have no doubt been loyal customers to these local shops.

“The price of goods must also be clearly indicated and inclusive of VAT.

“We would urge residents to report any concerns to [email protected]
