MP’s question on action to boost cancer survival

South West Beds MP Andrew Selous supports the Research Kills Cancer campaign

The MP has put that vital question to the Bedfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group.

That followed an update given to Mr Selous by Cancer Research UK on latest local cancer statistics. He visited the charity’s stand at the Conservative Party Conference.

The MP says research has led to UK cancer survival rates more than doubling in the past 40 years.

He showed support for the charity’s Research Kills Cancer campaign after hearing how much there is still to do to make the survival rates as good as the best in Europe.

And he heard that a new website, cruk.org/localstats, enables comparisons of local statistics with other areas.

Mr Selous said: “It’s really useful to see the latest statistics for South West Bedfordshire. I have already written to Bedfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group to ask what action they are taking to improve cancer survival rates locally as Cancer Research told me that the one-year lung cancer survival rate in the former Bedfordshire primary care trust area at 26.9 per cent is slightly worse than the English average of 29.4 per cent.”
