The survivors lap launched the relay at 12noon on Saturday and team members took turns to walk or run around the athletics track for 24 hours. The teams were dressed in blue T-shirts and some in fancy dress.

The overnight event was designed by organisers to show that cancer never sleeps, with all money raised going to Cancer Research UK.

Pauline Robb, one of the organisers, said: “We had a wonderful weekend. It was really fantastic, there was a great atmosphere and everyone really enjoyed it. We had a great turn-out from the public and there was loads of support.

“We have currently raised £40,000 and there’s still more coming in. I think we will definitely beat our target.”
