Trekker goes that extra mile

INTREPID trekker Surjeet Soin is setting out on a two-day hike to raise money and awareness of Diabetes UK.

This will probably seem like a walk in the park compared to some of his previous charity challenges which have included Everest, Ecuador and – closer to home – the Yorkshire Dales.

Surjeet, 67, who chairs Diabetes UK’s Luton Voluntary Group, has organised a mini trek across Bedfordshire, which he intends to complete in time to join the main Luton Walk for Diabetes at Dunstable Downs on June 10.

He will start the 16 mile journey at St Albans Town Hall on June 8 and arrive at Luton Town Hall 48 hours later.

The Luton accountant said: “Anyone can join me at any point along the way.

“But I wanted to raise a bit of profile before the main event and hopefully this will encourage others to sign up.”

This year’s campaign is ‘Putting feet first’ to bring an end to the unacceptably high number of preventable amputations in those with diabetes.

The Luton Walk for Diabetes starts at 2pm on Sunday June 10 and takes in the stunning countryside surrounding Dunstable Downs Country Park.
