A musical night with Alan

The broadcaster will be at Luton Library Theatre next week for the latest instalment in the Music on Mondays concert.

He and pianist Richard Sisson have put together a wide-ranging programme of readings and music loosely based on matters horticultural.

Terry Lockyer, of Luton Music Club, which has organised the series, said of Monday’s prigramme: “Touching, funny, beautiful, surprising, saucy, elegant – all of it is immaculately crafted and if you enjoy listening to it as much as they have enjoyed researching the material it promises an evening to be long remembered. It’s not to be missed by music lovers or gardeners.”

The programme includes readings from PG Wodehouse, Joyce Grenfell, Dylan Thomas, John Keats, Beatrix Potter, Rudyard Kipling and Laurie Lee.

Music comes from composers including Tchaikovsky and Vaughan Williams.

After making his name as a gardening expert on TV, Alan became a presenter in his own right, hosting shows including Pebble Mill and Songs of Praise, as well as programmes on Radio 2 and Classic FM. He is also a noted author.
