Electrical storm brewing at theatre in the legendary skating stunt show

It may be that I had a sheltered childhood, but I didn’t know much about Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Starlight Express until the announcement it was coming to Milton Keynes Theatre this month.

When I mentioned it to my boyfriend however, he made a noise that I can only describe as a (manly) squeal.

Apparently he went to see it when he was younger and loved it so much he can’t wait to watch it again - and he assures me it’s nothing to do with the ladies dressed in futuristic hotpants.

Starlight Express opened in 1984 in the West End and is one of the most successful and longest-running musicals ever.

Andrew Lloyd Webber originally wrote the show for his own children, and it was light years ahead of its time.

It’s a futuristic tale about love and hope in the face of adversity, and promises to take audiences on the ride of a lifetime with two hours of speed, spectacle, energy and dare-devil stunts.

The actors are all on skates and there’s fantastic roller-choreography by internationally renowned choreographer and popular television judge Arlene Phillips, who choreographed the original West End production and directed and choreographed several subsequent productions.

Her choreography combined with some of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most memorable musical hits on the electrifying soundtrack, and dazzling sets and costumes, makes this a show for both the young and young-at-heart.

The cast includes Mykal Rand, who joined the show in 1987 and has since performed in several different productions of the show in the role of Electra and as associate director/choreographer and resident director.

Joining him will be Kristofer Harding as Rusty, Jamie Capewell as Greaseball, Lothair Eaton as Poppa, Amanda Coutts as Pearl and Ruthie Stephens as Dinah.

From April 24- May 4.
