Avenue Q is renowned for its non-PC approach to life’s many problems and is not afraid to tell it like it is.

Funny, fierce and rather rude, this Dunstable Amateur Operatic Society (DAOS) production of the 2004 Tony Award-winner for Best New Musical, Best Book Of A Musical and Best Original Score is not to be missed.

Avenue Q is a coming-of-age parable, satirizing the issues associated with entering adulthood. Its characters lament that as children, they were assured by their parents, and by children’s television programmes like Sesame Street, that they were special and could do anything. But as adults they discover to their dismay that in the real world their options are limited and they are no more “special” than anyone else.

Princeton, a bright-eyed college graduate, has just moved to the neighbourhood to follow his dreams and discover his ever-elusive purpose in life. A tiny bank balance, the distraction of a busty blonde and a variety of weird and wonderful friends and neighbours lead Princeton on a hilarious story of self-discovery.

A DAOS spokesman said: “It is safe to say that if you are an adult with a good sense of humour, then Avenue Q is right up your street.

“If your teenager is mature enough to see a musical with a few swear words that’s about issues such as sex, drinking, and surfing the web for porn, then they’ll probably love Avenue Q, too. It’s hard to say what exact age is right to see Avenue Q – parents should use their discretion based on the maturity level of their children. But we promise you this – if you do bring your teenagers to Avenue Q, they’ll think you’re really cool!”
