WEDNESDAY JULY 6

Adults with learning difficulties arts and craft sessions. Every Wednesday 10.30am to 12.30pm and Saturdays from 11am to 1pm at Arttrend, Arundel Road, Luton. Social and creative activity for adults with learning difficulties, engaging in all types of art and craft work such as painting in acrylics, papier mache, salt dough, cross stitch, rug making etc. Please see the website www.arttrend.co.uk and go to Art ALD, then see the gallery of work already done. Luton Irish Forum holds a weekly Tuesday and Wednesday Club from 11am to 1.30pm at 102 Hitchin Road. This is a great chance to meet old friends and make some new ones.

THURSDAY JULY 7

Broadcast live from the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company, to the Grove Theatre in Dunstable is this new vision of Shakespeare’s heart-breaking tale of forbidden love. Branagh and his creative team present a modern, passionate version of the classic tragedy. A longstanding feud between Verona’s Montague and Capulet families brings devastating consequences for two lovers caught in the conflict. Kenneth Branagh directs Richard Madden and Lily James as Romeo and Juliet, and Sir Derek Jacobi as Mercutio. It starts at 7.15pm. Tickets: £15. Dougie Maclean has developed a unique blend of lyrical, ‘roots-based’ songwriting and instrumental composition. He is internationally renowned for his song Caledonia and his music for Hollywood film Last of the Mohicans. His songs have been covered by Paolo Nutini, Amy MacDonald, Ronan Keating, Mary Black, Frankie Miller, Cara Dillon, Kathy Mattea and many others. He has received two prestigious Tartan Clef awards, a place in the Scottish Music Hall of Fame, a Lifetime Achievement award from BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and an OBE. Ultimate Bowie comes to The Stables in Wavendon. Ed Blaney takes the spotlight and leads an eight-piece band that takes audiences from David Bowie’s early years, with hits such as Starman, through his remarkable career to songs including Let’s Dance, China Girl and many more. Two critically-acclaimed comedy acts are bringing a taste of the Edinburgh Fringe festival to The Hat Factory, Luton in a preview double bill. Cally Beaton, finalist of Max Turner Prize 2016 and Catherine Bohart, Laughing Horse Semi Finalist 2015, team up in the never-before-seen Cat Call which has been written and performed for Edinburgh 2016. With a 20-year age gap between them, Beaton & Bohart show there’s no wrong side of 40. Also starring on the night is comedy surrealist Richard Todd (pictured), preparing for his Edinburgh debut performance. Described as “a master of menial tasks,” his act shows him grappling with ambition. The show starts at 8pm and is suitable for ages 16 and over. Tickets cost £5. Never 42 have become established as a leading Level 42 tribute band in the UK. With their seven band members, get ready for a night of funk-driven tunes. Bringing the hits of Level 42, such as Lessons in Love, Something About You and The Sun Goes Down, Never 42 promise to recreate the sound of the 80s stalwarts with great accuracy. Luton’s Cultural Quarter - around the Bute and Guildford Street area - hosts a varied programme of activities. In addition to live music and dance from an outdoor stage, a number of blockbuster movies will be playing on the outdoor screen along with international sporting events. Throughout the event there will be a range of street performers providing entertainment including magic, juggling jesters and stilt walkers, while local restaurants set up food stalls for people to try the cuisine offered in the area. Club night Cali-R goes under canvas for a Summer Soul Explosion when promoter/DJ Sid Hudson returns to Dunstablians Rugby Club’s marquee. The rugby club, at the bottom of Bedford Road, Houghton Regis, has been a popular venue for the reunion nights in the past, and the latest event promises to be the biggest one yet, with Sid manning the decks for a mixture of soul, Tamla and reggae favourites in the big tent. TUESDAY JULY 12

Visiting Poet Merryn Williams will be reading from her work at High Town Community Sports and Arts Centre, Concorde Street, Luton from 8pm to 10pm. Merryn is a poet and critic who formerly edited The Interpreter’s House and ran the Bedford Open Poetry Competition. She has published four collections of poetry, the most recent being Letter to My Rival. Merryn invites the audience to bring their own contributions for the second half of the evening on the theme of ‘It is not about me’. All are welcome to this meeting, organised by Toddington Poetry Society in Luton, and entry is free to first-time attenders.
